/songket/ pada zaman neolithikum (abad 8 SM-2 SM), ditemukan sebuah tembikar yang didalamnya terdapat perhiasan dan kain tenun kasar. Penemuan itu menjelaskan bahwa pada masa prasejarah masyarakat indonesia telah mampu menciptakan tekstil. Hasil bumi berupa emas menginspirasi Raja Sriwijaya untuk mengirim sebagian emas tersebut ke Thailand untuk diolah menjadi benang emas. Mulai akhir abad ke-11, Tenun Songket Palembang mulai diciptakan dengan benang emas oleh gadis-gadis kerajaan. Kain tenun berlapis emas itu kemudian menjadi busana kebesaran raja dan bangsawan istana.
